On December 6, 2025, in the Skopje neighborhood of Madžir Maalo, the ecological initiative “Eco Clean-up” was implemented as part of the activities within the project ZZZ – Together for Green Advocacy for Environmental Protection.
The initiative was carried out by Petar Stevanović from “Za Počista Makedonija” and Dijana Velkovska, with mentoring support from Simona Petrovska from CYA Krik, and aimed to remove accumulated waste from the riverbank near Madžir Maalo while raising public awareness for environmental protection.
What was achieved?
Participants from different generations, aged 24 to 46, joined the action and together managed to collect more than 50 black bags (120 liters) of waste from the roller-skating and cycling path along the Vardar riverbank.
The event also gained media visibility through an announcement on the morning program of Alfa TV, contributing to broader public information and encouraging citizens to take part in similar environmental actions.
In addition to the direct cleaning of the space, the initiative created room for joint discussion and planning of future activities, with participants expressing strong motivation to continue actions aimed at improving the waste situation in the community.
Challenges and lessons learned
During the organization, difficulties arose related to the timely collection of the gathered waste by municipal services. However, through coordination and sharing the exact location, the waste was successfully collected, highlighting the importance of cooperation between civic initiatives and institutions.
This initiative once again demonstrated that joint action, care for public space, and civic responsibility can create visible changes in the local environment and inspire new green initiatives.
The initiative was implemented within the project “ZZZ – Together for Green Advocacy for Environmental Protection,” funded by the Government of Switzerland through the Civica Mobilitas program and implemented by the Center for Youth Activism KRIK, the Center for Social Initiatives “Nadez,” and the Association of Social Workers of Macedonia – ZSRM.
