Between June 28 and July 4, 2024, as part of the action research "From Diversity to Justice – Equal in the Right to a Healthy and Sustainable Environment for All" we carried out eight regional roundtables across the eight planning regions of the Republic of North Macedonia. These activities were essential for mapping local needs and challenges related to environmental protection and climate resilience.

What happened?

The roundtables were held in Skopje, Tetovo, Valandovo, Kriva Palanka, Negotino, Ohrid, Bitola, and Berovo. Participants included representatives from local governments, youth councils, social councils, public centers for social work, social service providers, civil society organizations, and youth organizations.

Our main goal was to create space for constructive discussion and joint reflection on local environmental issues, with a focus on the role of young people as leaders in environmental protection processes.

Key Elements of the Activities:

  • Diverse Participation: Each roundtable included 12 to 16 participants who shared their views, experiences, and suggestions regarding local environmental challenges and possible solutions.
  • Structured and Inclusive Discussions: The discussion format was carefully designed to ensure active and equal involvement from all participants. Every voice was heard and considered in the development of recommendations.
  • Regional Reports: After each roundtable, reports were prepared containing identified findings, suggestions, and conclusions specific to each region.

Results and Future Directions:

The findings collected during the roundtables will be integrated into a comprehensive national report. This document will serve as a foundation for further cross-sectoral and partnership cooperation at both local and national levels. The report will be a key guide in the creation of strategies for environmental protection and climate change adaptation.

Gratitude

We extend our sincere gratitude to all participants and stakeholders who contributed to the success of these meetings. Their commitment and enthusiasm are our inspiration in building a healthier, more sustainable, andmore inclusive environment.

The project “ZZZ – Together for Green Advocacy for Environmental Protection” is supported by the Government of Switzerland through the Civica Mobilitas program. It is implemented in partnership between the Center for Youth Activism KRIK, the Center for Social Initiatives “Nadezh,” and the Association of Social Workers of Macedonia – ZSRM.

The goal of the project is to integrate an environmental perspective into social and youth work as an essential element for environmental protection and the creation of an inclusive and democratic society for all.
